Before arrival
Prepare the home before collecting the puppy. A calm, predictable first day reduces stress.

The first night
Expect some crying after separation from the litter. Keep the puppy secure, nearby and calm. Do not overwhelm it with visitors, loud play or unrestricted access to the whole house.

Feeding transition
Continue the existing food and schedule initially. A sudden switch can cause diarrhoea. Any change should be gradual over several days, adjusted with veterinary guidance.

Veterinary care
Take the records to your own veterinarian. Confirm the next vaccination and deworming dates, parasite prevention plan and when public-ground exposure becomes appropriate.

Training foundations
Start with the puppy’s name, recall, toilet routine, calm handling and brief positive sessions. Avoid punishment-heavy methods and excessive exercise for growing joints.

Grooming and handling
Introduce gentle brushing, paw handling, ear checks and brief mouth inspection while the puppy is calm. This makes future veterinary and grooming care easier.

Prepare for the adult dog—not only the puppy.
Training, exercise, companionship, veterinary costs and secure living arrangements remain necessary for many years.
